Tropical Storm Talas On Path to Japan

Tropical Storm Talas is heading for the island of Honshu in Japan and will slowly intensify as it tracks over warm water. Although Talas is not expected to reach tropical cyclone strength before landfall, and the mountainous terrain of mainland Japan should cause Talas to weaken considerably, heavy downpours, flash floods and landslides will be imminent threats to lives and property as it comes ashore Friday September 2.

 
Hurricane Irene Makes Landfall - Visible Satellite Image

Hurricane Irene made landfall at approximately 7:30 am EDT near Cape Lookout, North Carolina with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (Category 1). These two NOAA GOES-13 satellite images capture Irene’s landfall moment. The first uses the visible sensor; the second is colorized infrared imagery. Hurricane warnings are in effect for much of the U.S. coast from North Carolina to Maine

5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Virginia, Washington, D.C.

Washington, Aug 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A 5.8 magnitude earthquake has struck Virginia. The quake was felt in Washington, New York and North Carolina. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake struck on Tuesday at about 1:51 p.m.

USGS reports that they expect some damages to be done to old buildings at the epicenter of the quake. Residents at the affected parts have been warned that they should expect several aftershocks in the hours following the quake.
